Clovelly

Situated on the cliffs of north Devon overlooking Bideford Bay, Clovelly's narrow cobbled street run down from Mount Pleasant to its tiny harbour.

It's most famous resident was author Charles Kingsley who lived in Clovelly as a child. He returned to write 'Westward Ho!' and it's said that it was also the inpiration for his novel 'The Water Babies'.

The harbour is still a vibrant fishing port, with catches ranging from seabass to lobster. This stretch of coast is notoriously unforgiving and a lifeboat has been stationed at Clovelly since 1870.

There are many B&B's in the village and both the New Inn and The Red Lion hotel offer accomodation and meals.

By the way, the main street is referred to as Down-a-Long if you're going down, and Up-a-Long if you're on your way up!
